Old Jokes Become New Realities

Close to four years ago, I posted a parody of a local right wing message board full of drunkards, giving my interpretation of their wackiness. I wrote it in a matter of minutes based on various inebriated attitudes that were prevalent on the board.

I titled the mock topic, "White males real victims of racism? Yep!!!"

Turns out just three days ago Science Daily reported of a real life study suggesting that whites at least believe they are now victims of racism more than blacks. No, really.

Some excerpts from Science Daily:

Whites believe that they have replaced blacks as the primary victims of racial discrimination in contemporary America, according to a new study from researchers at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School.

Sommers and co-author Michael I. Norton of Harvard asked a nation-wide sample of 208 blacks and 209 whites to indicate the extent to which they felt blacks and whites were the targets of discrimination in each decade from the 1950s to the 2000s. A scale of 1 to 10 was used, with 1 being "not at all" and 10 being "very much."

White and black estimates of bias in the 1950s were similar. Both groups acknowledged little racism against whites at that time but substantial racism against blacks. Respondents also generally agreed that racism against blacks has decreased over time, although whites believed it has declined faster than blacks do.

However, whites believed that racism against whites has increased significantly as racism against blacks has decreased. On average, whites rated anti-white bias as more prevalent in the 2000s than anti-black bias by more than a full point on the 10-point scale. Moreover, some 11 percent of whites gave anti-white bias the maximum rating of 10 compared to only 2 percent of whites who rated anti-black bias a 10. Blacks, however, reported only a modest increase in their perceptions of "reverse racism."

"These data are the first to demonstrate that not only do whites think more progress has been made toward equality than do blacks, but whites also now believe that this progress is linked to a new inequality -- at their expense," note Norton and Sommers. Whites see racial equality as a zero sum game, in which gains for one group mean losses for the other.

Sadly, back then I thought these people were just the fringe twenty percenters.

The Decline of the Middle Class, Big Screen TV's, and the "Economists" Who Link the Two

I'm back for a brief second to squash the often cited reasons as to why Americans today aren't saving, and are therefore in a financial predicament, compared to thirty years ago.

Law scholar Elizabeth Warren teaches contract law, bankruptcy, and commercial law at Harvard Law School and conducted a study a few years back that compared median household incomes and their basic expenses between the 1970's to 2005. Her results were just as I had always suspected.

Note that the data compared families with the same composition: a mother, father, and two child middle class family, all inflation adjusted.

But first, let's examine the main conservative argument used to explain why Americans aren't saving or seeing their incomes rise:

They spend all their money on big screen TV's, designer clothing, and eating out.

Based on this argument, one would naturally deduce that people are consuming much more crap - while maxing out their credit cards - rather than saving their money as families in the 1970's were apparently able to do (about 11% of their income).

However, based on Ms. Warren's data, Americans are actually spending a considerable amount less on those crap items than they were 30 years ago. For example, a family is spending 32% less on clothing, 18% less on food, and 52% less on appliances. So much for the idea that we are consuming more of those "unnecessary items."

So the question is, if all those things went down, where is the family spending more money? Accordingly, there has been a 76% increase in mortgages for the same sized home, 74% increase in health care among healthy families, 52% increase in automobiles, and 100% increase in child care. The last two increases are based primarily on the fact that families today are required to have two working parents; therefore, two cars as opposed to one and, of course, daycare since one parent no longer stays at home.

The real problem we see from this data is that all those items that decreased are all flexible purchases. In other words, families are able to cut back their spending habits on clothing, food, and appliances. In contrast, all the increased expenditures such as health care and mortgages, are not flexible. Additionally, the early 1970's family was spending about half of its income on these big fixed expenses that are very difficult to cut back on, while the family of the 2000's are spending 3/4 of their income on these same fixed expenses.

What this tells us, despite the fact that we now have two working parents, is that today's families have fewer total dollars left over than their one income parents had 30 years ago (wages have remained approximately stable since the 70's, inflation adjusted). The problem does not lie upon unnecessary consumption, but the fact that the large fixed expenses have just gotten so much greater.

Sarah Palin Wants the Economy to Fail

Sarah Palin has announced that she is rejecting almost 30% of stimulus money to her town, err I mean state, of Alaska. The bulk of her rejection money goes to education. Considering she speaks as though she has a fourth grade education, no surprise there.

Other Republican governors also rejecting "portions" of stimulus money:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry last week announced that he turned down $555 million of federal stimulus funding that would expand the state's unemployment benefits. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has said he would not accept nearly $100 million to expand unemployment benefits. And South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has said he only wants to use the federal money to pay down debt.

Unemployment benefits give a much greater bank for the buck than tax cuts do.
But don't be fooled by these asshole governors. Palin et al KNOW that unemployment benefits help more than twice as much as tax cuts do, but are counting on the economy to FAIL so they have justification to run in the next Presidential election cycle. How un-American. How treasonous!

News comes out that Obama plans to include 300 billion in tax cuts for families and business in his stimulus package. Apparently, this is a move aimed at gaining support from the Republicans. You know, that bipartisan angle Obama has been leaning on since day one.

Nonetheless, Paul Krugman makes a most delightful point to any economic recovery plan:

Let’s lay out the basics here. Other things equal, public investment is a much better way to provide economic stimulus than tax cuts, for two reasons. First, if the government spends money, that money is spent, helping support demand, whereas tax cuts may be largely saved. So public investment offers more bang for the buck. Second, public investment leaves something of value behind when the stimulus is over.

My question is, now that we have only the most ardent and conservative Republicans left to deal with in Congress, why is Obama betting that they will play ball even if he tries to appease them with these tax cuts? In fact, I bet this won't even begin to appease these lunatics...it will simply make them ask for more...and ultimately give them an excuse to suddenly become fiscally responsible. "Whoopsie, it was all spent on tax cuts, sorry!"

Democrats finally have a huge majority, minus one filibuster proof vote in the Senate now that Al Franken seems to have won. You mean to tell me that Obama and the rest of the Democrats can't find one other congressperson to vote their way and pass this stimulus package on their terms? Of course, it would have to be to the chagrin of those dipshit Republicans, who are proven economic failures, and who wouldn't know how to balance a budget if their lives depended on it anyway.

I was always suspicious of Obama's bipartisan attitude but he has been able to pull this thing off so far. Maybe all of these new green technologies and infrastructure projects will actually pan out like they should, regardless. Maybe he knows something we all don't know, but the Republicans - especially the most fervent maniacs that are left - are not going to make it easy on him. Personally, I would steamroll over Republicans like wet icky asphalt:

Robert Byrd Stepped Up in 2003

Byrd has been appearing frail as of late and has decided to step down as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Jan. 6. On that day, it will have been almost 6 years that he made his prophetic speech against the Bush Administration's decision for preemptive war. For whatever bad decisions he may have made in his younger years, and for whatever physical and/or mental issues he is dealing with now, he was right all along assholes.

"We Stand Passively Mute"

To contemplate war is to think about the most horrible of human experiences. On this February day, as this nation stands at the brink of battle, every American on some level must be contemplating the horrors of war.

Yet, this Chamber is, for the most part, silent -- ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war. There is nothing.

We stand passively mute in the United States Senate, paralyzed by our own uncertainty, seemingly stunned by the sheer turmoil of events. Only on the editorial pages of our newspapers is there much substantive discussion of the prudence or imprudence of engaging in this particular war.

And this is no small conflagration we contemplate. This is no simple attempt to defang a villain. No. This coming battle, if it materializes, represents a turning point in U.S. foreign policy and possibly a turning point in the recent history of the world.

This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list. High level Administration figures recently refused to take nuclear weapons off of the table when discussing a possible attack against Iraq. What could be more destabilizing and unwise than this type of uncertainty, particularly in a world where globalism has tied the vital economic and security interests of many nations so closely together? There are huge cracks emerging in our time-honored alliances, and U.S. intentions are suddenly subject to damaging worldwide speculation. Anti-Americanism based on mistrust, misinformation, suspicion, and alarming rhetoric from U.S. leaders is fracturing the once solid alliance against global terrorism which existed after September 11.

Here at home, people are warned of imminent terrorist attacks with little guidance as to when or where such attacks might occur. Family members are being called to active military duty, with no idea of the duration of their stay or what horrors they may face. Communities are being left with less than adequate police and fire protection. Other essential services are also short-staffed. The mood of the nation is grim. The economy is stumbling. Fuel prices are rising and may soon spike higher.

This Administration, now in power for a little over two years, must be judged on its record. I believe that that record is dismal.

In that scant two years, this Administration has squandered a large projected surplus of some $5.6 trillion over the next decade and taken us to projected deficits as far as the eye can see. This Administration's domestic policy has put many of our states in dire financial condition, under funding scores of essential programs for our people. This Administration has fostered policies which have slowed economic growth. This Administration has ignored urgent matters such as the crisis in health care for our elderly. This Administration has been slow to provide adequate funding for homeland security. This Administration has been reluctant to better protect our long and porous borders.

In foreign policy, this Administration has failed to find Osama bin Laden. In fact, just yesterday we heard from him again marshaling his forces and urging them to kill. This Administration has split traditional alliances, possibly crippling, for all time, International order-keeping entities like the United Nations and NATO. This Administration has called into question the traditional worldwide perception of the United States as well-intentioned, peacekeeper. This Administration has turned the patient art of diplomacy into threats, labeling, and name calling of the sort that reflects quite poorly on the intelligence and sensitivity of our leaders, and which will have consequences for years to come.

Calling heads of state pygmies, labeling whole countries as evil, denigrating powerful European allies as irrelevant -- these types of crude insensitivities can do our great nation no good. We may have massive military might, but we cannot fight a global war on terrorism alone. We need the cooperation and friendship of our time-honored allies as well as the newer found friends whom we can attract with our wealth. Our awesome military machine will do us little good if we suffer another devastating attack on our homeland which severely damages our economy. Our military manpower is already stretched thin and we will need the augmenting support of those nations who can supply troop strength, not just sign letters cheering us on.

The war in Afghanistan has cost us $37 billion so far, yet there is evidence that terrorism may already be starting to regain its hold in that region. We have not found bin Laden, and unless we secure the peace in Afghanistan, the dark dens of terrorism may yet again flourish in that remote and devastated land.

Pakistan as well is at risk of destabilizing forces. This Administration has not finished the first war against terrorism and yet it is eager to embark on another conflict with perils much greater than those in Afghanistan. Is our attention span that short? Have we not learned that after winning the war one must always secure the peace?

And yet we hear little about the aftermath of war in Iraq. In the absence of plans, speculation abroad is rife. Will we seize Iraq's oil fields, becoming an occupying power which controls the price and supply of that nation's oil for the foreseeable future? To whom do we propose to hand the reins of power after Saddam Hussein?

Will our war inflame the Muslim world resulting in devastating attacks on Israel? Will Israel retaliate with its own nuclear arsenal? Will the Jordanian and Saudi Arabian governments be toppled by radicals, bolstered by Iran which has much closer ties to terrorism than Iraq?

Could a disruption of the world's oil supply lead to a world-wide recession? Has our senselessly bellicose language and our callous disregard of the interests and opinions of other nations increased the global race to join the nuclear club and made proliferation an even more lucrative practice for nations which need the income?

In only the space of two short years this reckless and arrogant Administration has initiated policies which may reap disastrous consequences for years.

One can understand the anger and shock of any President after the savage attacks of September 11. One can appreciate the frustration of having only a shadow to chase and an amorphous, fleeting enemy on which it is nearly impossible to exact retribution.

But to turn one's frustration and anger into the kind of extremely destabilizing and dangerous foreign policy debacle that the world is currently witnessing is inexcusable from any Administration charged with the awesome power and responsibility of guiding the destiny of the greatest superpower on the planet. Frankly many of the pronouncements made by this Administration are outrageous. There is no other word.

Yet this chamber is hauntingly silent. On what is possibly the eve of horrific infliction of death and destruction on the population of the nation of Iraq -- a population, I might add, of which over 50% is under age 15 -- this chamber is silent. On what is possibly only days before we send thousands of our own citizens to face unimagined horrors of chemical and biological warfare -- this chamber is silent. On the eve of what could possibly be a vicious terrorist attack in retaliation for our attack on Iraq, it is business as usual in the United States Senate.

We are truly "sleepwalking through history." In my heart of hearts I pray that this great nation and its good and trusting citizens are not in for a rudest of awakenings.

To engage in war is always to pick a wild card. And war must always be a last resort, not a first choice. I truly must question the judgment of any President who can say that a massive unprovoked military attack on a nation which is over 50% children is "in the highest moral traditions of our country". This war is not necessary at this time. Pressure appears to be having a good result in Iraq. Our mistake was to put ourselves in a corner so quickly. Our challenge is to now find a graceful way out of a box of our own making. Perhaps there is still a way if we allow more time.

Howard Dean's strategy to go after all 50 states turned out to be the right one. Indiana blue? It was totally over, however, after Ohio. That was one of the big ones and as soon as California, Oregon, and Washington went blue, McCain gave his concession speech.

Turnout was over 64% of the population. 131 million Americans will have voted this year, compared to 2004's 122.3 million.

I think it's safe to say that the people gave Mr. Obama and Congress a MANDATE - unlike Chimpboy's delusioned idea that he had one. Let's hope they do good things.

PENNSYLVANIA: Voting machine malfunctions are widespread and at least a dozen locations, mainly focused on Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

VIRGINIA: Dozens of polling places are experiencing varying degrees of machine malfunctions. Some polling places are either completely closed or have been closed for hours. Thousands of voters may have been turned away illegally by polling workers. Voters have illegally been issued with provisional ballots where machines have been broken.

There's probably a lot of sites that will be live blogging and updating their maps in real time tonight but I like Electoral-Vote.com because it not only gives you an overview of the Presidential map, but also Senate and House races, and informative stats from past elections. From their current polling map:

Obama will take all the states John Kerry won in 2004, worth 252 electoral votes. He also has led consistently in three Bush states: Iowa, New Mexico, and Colorado, worth a total of 21 electoral votes. Together with the Kerry states, this gives Obama 273 EVs and the presidency, even if McCain runs the table on the other swing states. However, Obama is leading in Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia, and essentially tied in Florida, North Carolina, and Missouri. It is likely that Obama will win the election with well over 300 electoral votes, possibly 350 of them.

Real Clear Politics has Obama polling with an average of +7.8 points today. Hope it's enough...

West Virginia has been consistently for McCain, except for a small bump in early October that went for Obama.
Hope WV gets this one wrong...

I predict a 53% win by popular vote for Obama. In reality, it should be a lot more, but there's enough purging and suppression and shitty machines to reduce that number.

I did the early voting on the last day in Kanawha County. While waiting in line for about 40 minutes, I overheard some older gents and ladies discussing what church they attended. Then one of the ladies said she thinks the election is going to be close because the media is biased. Then I slapped her. No, I just stood there and eavesdropped. The election will only be close because of shenanigans. Obama should destroy McCain by 20 points - easily.

Election Fraud is Real, Voter Fraud is Not

Already, we are seeing problems with early voting in West Virginia where voters using touchscreen machines have claimed that their votes were switched from Democrat to Republican. Thankfully, SagaciousHillbilly has been pounding away at the issue and asks "where's the outrage."

A good summary of the issue of election fraud, as opposed to voter fraud, comes from a DemocracyNow clip where NYU professor Mark Crispin Miller, author of Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy, and a book I actually read, Fooled Again: The Real Case for Electoral Reform, explains just how perilous this has become for our democracy. Although there is virtually no evidence of anyone turning up at a polling place, risking jail by actually voting as Donald Duck, and consequently throwing an election, there is substantial evidence of voter purging, suppression, and defective machines that all seem to flip for a Republican - all of which ultimately do throw elections.

Side note: I'm not the least bit surprised there's a strong correlation between those fanatics who are hell bent on saving babies from being aborted and their seemingly justified effort to steal elections via electronic voting machines. I won't make any immediate allegations, because this is just one of my cock-a-mammy theories, but while posting on the Heavy Hitter Message Board in 2005 and 2006 (I won't link there anymore because it's virus infested), the moderator was hell bent on completely deleting all discussion of election fraud and those piece of shit electronic voting machines. That same moderator also made it a habit of posting disgusting pictures of aborted babies as a way to make a case for life. As Sarah Palin would say: "I'm just sayin'."

Clinton, Glass-Steagall, and Dipshits Who Link the Two

Many critics love to cite Bill Clinton as being responsible for the economic woes we are seeing today. That is true only in the sense that he was el Presidente at the time the Glass-Steagall Act was repealed.

But first, let's be clear:

The repeal enabled commercial lenders such as Citigroup, the largest U.S. bank by assets, to underwrite and trade instruments such as mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations and establish so-called structured investment vehicles, or SIVs, that bought those securities.

In other words, it allowed the big banks to compete in the world of risky lending and investment practices that smaller derivatives such as mortgage brokers were already engaging in.

However, had stringent regulations been implemented and executed by the Bush White House for all these risky investments and loans, and had this ideology that the market takes care of itself not been revered as gospel, then it would not have mattered that Glass-Steagall was ever repealed. Glass-Steagall did not provide the regulation of the mortgage industry. It simply allowed the big boyz to enter riskier markets and had there been regulations in place, then the big boyz who are too big to fail would have never failed to begin with.

Now let's get back to Clinton and the Glass-Steagall Act.

The bill that ultimately repealed the Act was introduced in the Senate by Phil Gramm (R-TX) and in the House of Representatives by James Leach (R-IA) in 1999. The bills were passed by a 54-44 vote along party lines with Republican support in the Senate[8] and by a 343-86 vote in the House of Representatives[9]. Nov 4, 1999: After passing both the Senate and House the bill was moved to a conference committee to work out the differences between the Senate and House versions. The final bipartisan bill resolving the differences was passed in the Senate 90-8-1 and in the House: 362-57-15. Without forcing a veto vote, this bipartisan, veto proof legislation was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on November 12, 1999.

Clinton's hands were essentially tied by the Republican and Corporate Democratic controlled Congress and banks have been lobbying for the removal of the Act since the 1970's. Of course, if he was as disrespectful to the Constitution as Bush, he would have just issued a signing statement to serve as a line-item veto to get rid of the disliked portions of the bill.

Let's not forget, Phil Gramm is McCain's top economic advisor. McCain also refuses to rule out appointing Phil "Nation of Whiners" Gramm as Treasury Secretary.

Frontline did a piece on the history of credit, mortages, and interest rates that follows nicely to what Clinton was getting at before HasselBitch wanted to move on to his Global Initiative around the 5 minute mark.

Mortgaging the Future

Interest rate deregulation dovetailed neatly with a seemingly unrelated phenomenon: the bidding war for suburban housing. The mortgage industry shook off its interest rate regulations just a few years after the credit card industry. In the new world of unfettered mortgage lending, no longer would the middle-class family be restricted to a conventional 80 percent mortgage. The floodgates were opened, and families could get all the mortgage money they ever dreamed of to bid on that precious home in the suburbs -- even if the price tag was more than they could realistically afford.

And as nicely as Clinton pointed out in the clip, every home owner that goes looking for a loan only thinks of one thing: "Can I afford the monthly payment." If they can, then sub-prime rates, interest only loans, sneaky legal language, and the like do not enter the minds of most average Americans. Therefore, placing blame on the people who took out these loans is questionable at best. Of course, many probably should have known better, yet these banks should have never been allowed to issue so many risky loans in the first place.

So to the degree that the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act allowed banks to get into non-traditional banking activities like investments and stupid loans, sure, that was a factor. But I believe the lenient regulations and failure of self-regulating internally within the company (i.e. the free hand of the market) hold the biggest burden of the blame than anything else. Again, it's this type of altruistic market philosophy that the Republicans have been hammering for, and winning, for the past 30 years.

These large banks are not in trouble due to the fact that they may have a brokerage branch. They are in trouble because they hold bad mortgages as a result of de-regulation.

In light of the 2008 Presidential Debates starting September 26, Jim Lehrer of PBS fame had a most awesome program called
Debating our Destiny that examined past presidential (and vice presidential) debates since 1976. All living Presidents and Vice's agreed to be interviewed except Al Gore. That's unfortunate because it was the first Gore/Bush debate that was most revealing in my opinion.

Man, what could have been. I mean, does it take a NASA scientist to figure out that Gore was right about everything, including what to do with the surplus we had? Fiscal conservatism is a made up term too, by the way!

You can see Gore become animated with the absurdity of Bush's retarded statements and flat out falsehoods with sighs, rolling eyes, and flailing hands. I don't actually think this cost him the election (since it was stolen) but it helped perpetuate the meme that Gore is "the liar" when it was actually the other fucking guy. Bush even used the "inventing the internet" line that conservadips continue to cite to this very day. Watching Bush recall those debates is almost sickening. He admittedly recounts using "zingers" as he calls them, to counteract the factual assertions Gore was making about the economy. "Fuzzy math" Bush said then, without any explanation as to exactly how the math was supposed to be fuzzy. But the cretins who voted for him don't require rational explanations, so there you have it.

The second debate had the two sitting down, I guess to make a less combative atmosphere, but the third had a moment when Gore walked toward Bush in that chest butting kinda way men do - probably because he was just so fed up with the bullshit. Bush responded with a wink like the ass pirate that he is. That third debate was the townhall setting the conservatives typically prefer because they consist of 90 second answers and no follow-ups. Another reason McCain continues to insist on these brain-dead, memorized townhall debates that Obama has been refusing.

The 2004 debates displayed even more absurdness from the conservatives and don't be surprised when McPalin's debating skillz will be adored by media pundits and half-witted voters alike. It's as if the debates have become a frenzy of "zingers" and meaningless issues while specific policy points are too darned difficult to grasp. Just recall Hillary and Obama's last debate with ABC's Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos for a prime example.

Despite the retarded questions that will inevitably be asked this go around, and despite how retardedly McPalin answers them, I have no doubt that Obama and Biden will out play these two fools - at least in the eyes of the mentally alert. Hopefully they'll learn from these past debates and won't hold back attacking the pitbull and the insane POW. Attack, attack, attack (but keep it truthful), and don't allow yourself to be attacked like the liberal wussy that you are ... because that is what people pay attention to.

I would be lying if I said that I'm not surprised that the media would end up loving Sarah Palin after her speech at the RNC last night. Heck, even their one sentence talking point got faxed to every news outlet and was repeated with actual seriousness.

"A star is born," said Chris Wallace on Fox.

"A star is born," said Anderson Cooper on CNN.

The media has admittedly been on Obama's side for a time. I wouldn't say completely considering the Wright scandals and the incessant circulation of ridiculous claims that he is a secret Muslim terrorist. Sorry, he's a moderate Christian just like the rest of you hypocrites.

The media has, in fact, had a fascination with Obama and has taken a small liking to a Democrat, probably not seen since Kennedy. But after the dust settles, the media must take it's predictable turn, under the guise of fair reporting, and actually gloat over the most unqualified VP pick in a century.

I won't even entertain the ridiculous notion that Obama lacks experience. Call me an elitist but I trust a man who put himself through Harvard Law School to make intelligent decisions about the safety and security of our country more than a hotheaded bottom of the class buffoon who is willing to bomb anything in his path. It's just me but if you forgot Czechoslovakia was no longer a country then maybe you should have paid attention in class if you ever plan on invading them one day!

It doesn't surprise me that Palin is another dullard conservative who panders to the idea of raping oil rich land and pocketing its riches. McCain is the same is the same is the same as Bush, and it really makes no difference that he chose a running mate with the same unabashed thievery of the American people and un-maverick-like qualities. Sorry lady, but governing an entire State with less people than the city of Chicago does not make one a political maverick or apart from the Washington elite. It makes you about as qualified as Rusty Casto.

It doesn't necessarily surprise me either that she campaigned as a fiscal conservative (like they all do) in Wasilla, Alaska and then increased government expenditures (like they all do) by 33%. Taxes were also increased by 38% in an underhanded move (like they all do) by lowering property taxes and increasing sales taxes. Essentially, the wealthy land owners benefited and the residents of Wasilla did not.

It wasn't enough that she was given zero debt to play with, that she had to leave a city with a population no bigger than Nitro, WV in debt (like they all do) for 22 million because a SuperDome was more important than a sewage treatment plant. Can you imagine a SuperDome in Nitro?

What does frighten me the most, however, is her pander to the extreme religious right. Because these are the people who not only want all your money, but they want you kept dumb and justifiably enslaved - mostly the women and darkies.

What you are seeing is the media's natural tendency to gloss over the real issues facing our country. Instead of making fun of Bristol Palin's babbydaddy, they should be asking how a mother who cut funding for teenage pregnancy, promoted abstinence-only education, and cut funding for special needs babies could possibly be so hypocritical. How can you force others to abide by your set of moral codes when you can't even abide by them yourself you sorry example.

Instead of telling her she's a trooper for homeschooling son Stump and daughter TwitterBug, ask her how she plans to reject science in our public schools and ban books from public libraries because James Dobson told her to do it.

Instead of likening her to Hillary Clinton, demand logical examples of how Miss Congeniality and a Governor of 20 months compares to a lifetime of achievement. Because actually working hard, educating yourself in political law and public policy, serving in the Senate, and fighting for women's rights can't possibly be as admirable as getting it handed to you!

So Sarah Palin will cinch the evangelical base. That is a given and the second reason McCain picked her. But remember, Karl Rove is actually advising this campaign as well, and it was the evangelical excuse used to explain how Bush got so many votes in 2004. I'm just sayin'.

Right after Super Tuesday I thought it was awfully weird that Obama was basically winning his delegates from caucuses and deep red states, and to me that meant something stunk. Yet I didn't have the data to back up my common sense. But looky, here's a neat report from TalkLeft that explains why caucuses suck and my instincts were right.

97% of pledged delegate difference between Obama and Clinton is directly related to the caucus victories, caucus delegates’ account for 1 in every 6.5 DNC delegates and nearly 2/3 of those delegates will vote pro-Obama essentially giving them substantially more clout in determining the 2008 Democratic nominee.

21 of Obama’s 29 states won are either caucus states or Red states – including 80% of the deepest Red that have not voted Democratic since 1964 to 1976. With a win in SD and MT, he will finish with 230 Electoral Votes –121 of those from Red states.

Notably, if Obama is the Democratic nominee, he will start the race for the Presidency with 109 Electoral Votes from blue or purple states. That’s 40% of what he’ll need to win in November.

In contrast, only one of Clinton’s 20 states won is a caucus and only 26% of her total Electoral Votes are from Red states. Further, 227 of Clinton’s 308 EV are from blue and purple states meaning that she would start the Presidential race having won states that account for 84% of the EV needed to win the White House.

My co-worker can bullshit his way into thinking that these caucuses represent an accurate percentage of the will of the voter, but he's wrong and I'm right, as usual...

Though voters in all 13 caucus states have cast only 3.2% of the total 33.5 million votes so far – those votes control 15.3% of the pledged delegates and 16.4% of the Super delegates sent to the DNC Convention – average 15.5% of the total delegates [626 caucus / 4047 total]. After all remaining primaries the total votes could easily top 36 million, dropping the caucus vote to 2.9% of the total. In that event, 1 out of every 34 votes will determine and control 1 of every 6.5 delegates.

Bottom line: caucus voters will have a grossly disproportionate role in determining the 2008 Democratic nominee.

Not to mention, caucuses suppress voter turnout by disenfranchising voters with disabilities, the elderly, voters with limited English skillz (immigrants are people too), military folk overseas, and anyone else who is physically unable to "meet" at the "scheduled" time these caucuses are held.

Because our "democratic" system is so screwy, we're going to hedge our bets on the Unity Pony anyway. No surprise.

Bottom line for crystaldawn: Hillary may have an uphill battle against McCain as well, but she represents the will of the voters much more accurately than Obama's bullshit caucuses (i.e. boyz club meetings) do. Yet Hillary has been called to drop out since before Super Tuesday, even though the MATH has never really been on Obama's side either. Hope you enjoy another four years of record oil profits, housing slumps, inflation, war, and more hell in a hand-basket assholes!!

Since Obama is the chosen one he needs to pick Chuck Hagel for VP or someone like him. Someone who's kinda opposite of the "perception" of Obama, like a tough white military centrist...to combat McCain's mythical foreign policy expertise. Because everyone thinks Obama is some sort of hippy liberal progressive (he's really a moderate christrian, like Hillary) he needs that military figure head of a Hagel to play off the turist fear card. Unfortunately, the Obama campaign has perverted the concept of hope by wedding it to a dangerous politics of compromise, concession and cunning.

Despite his claims of being a peace candidate, Obama has repeatedly expressed a commitment to ramping up military and continuing the presidential legacy of using war as an instrument of foreign policy. Although he opposes the war in Iraq, Obama refuses to vote against its funding.

While Obama supports health care for all Americans, he does not embrace a universal single-payer system that would effectively undermine private corporate interests. At the same time that he bemoans the loss of jobs and expansion of global poverty, Obama fails to denounce free trade agreements and extols the virtues economic globalization. In addition, Obama has been conspicuously silent on topics such as the prison industrial complex, the Zionist occupation of Palestine, and the economic underdevelopment of Africa.

To believe that Obama is a Kucinich leftist rather than a Clinton centrist is to ignore his own expressed positions. To believe that the world will be markedly improved after an Obama presidency is to ignore the structure of corporate-controlled politics. To believe that Obama is prepared to address the fundamental structure of our political system is to ignore his own investment in it. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Barack Obama is asking us to do: vote for him as a change maker against all evidence to the contrary. That sounds more like the hope of audacity than the audacity of hope.

I suppose many of the same arguments can be made for Hillary, as I have some of the same "Iraq" "free trade" and "corporate" issues with her. Still, things were pretty fucking good under Bill Clinton. Even a middle class wingnut would have to concede to that. At least we can qualify the results of the Clinton years instead of clinging on to this brand of dogma-like hope that Obama is promising.

Will Ralph Nader Run Again?

Crooks & Liars has an interesting piece up today about Ralph Nader launching an exploratory website possibly to get enough money to gain ballot access in November's election.

In 2004, Nader took a portion of the Democratic vote away from Kerry and he might be wanting (or someone else might be wanting him) to do the same again. Let's be honest, Nader can't conceivably win. He can only take votes away from someone and divide the base. I understand his and many of his followers premise: that the two parties are really one and we need more options and to progress the debate in this country. But this is the last thing we need right now! The margins are extremely wide at this point, and it is possible Nader can put a wrench in this whole thing - albeit a small wrench but maybe just enough.

Yes, the Democratic Party can be just as insidious and corporately controlled as the Republicans. Yet Nader claims he's the antithesis of corporate control while CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) says he's got a problem with that stance. Like corporate front groups that were allied with Bush in 2004 were also helping him out. Whether it was a small donation or not, it's still hypocrisy on Nader's part.

Now is not the time to divide up the vote among different parties. Now is not the time for a Nader. I completely agree that multiple parties should have already happened, but in order for that to happen, you have to take the incremental steps toward that goal. The first step is to remove these regressive Republicans who absolutely refuse to further the debate.

UPDATE:

An astute fellow blogger posted the clarification for me in the comments concerning Tuesday's WV primary. Rather, a GOP convention is happening Tuesday, which will pick up some delegates for the Republicans. But no voting. I still think this delegate/primary issue begs the question of sanity and sensibility. And we shouldn't be swayed from letting our voices be heard - especially when it's the majority!

In Florida, the Democratic Party opted out of Jan. 29th's primary as a punishment to Florida lawmakers for violating the schedule they had originally set - which was supposed to be in March instead of January.

From what I am understanding about this completely insane way our country votes, West Virginia is included in next week's Super Tuesday ~~except we'll be voting in the Republican race only.~~ In other words, no delegates will be awarded to any of the Democratic candidates, but that doesn't necessarily mean people won't be able to speak.

Simply look at what happened last night in Florida. Hillary got ZERO delegates, yet over a million people voted for her. About half of that voted for Obama.

My point is that actual human beings voted today. If it is inappropriate for Clinton to declare victory it's also damned inappropriate for every gasbag on television to say that all these votes are completely meaningless. They may not add to the delegate count, but they were cast in good faith by American citizens and they should be treated with respect by these jackasses.

More people showed up to vote in Florida for Democratic candidates than previous states so far. That's more than double the people that voted in 2004. And about double the people have been showing up to vote for Democrats instead of Republicans in each of the 2008 primaries thus far. That's a significant margin and it is setting a precedent for this election.

Regardless of the delegate issue, there's no way in hell a Democrat is going to win office unless we the people continue to get out and vote in such large numbers, and by such large margins against the Republicans. I have absolutely no idea if Hillary or Obama can beat McCain. National head-to-head polls show that Obama can beat McCain slightly easier than Hillary but at this point it's still anybody's game. Except it's the Democratic's game now. Look at any poll or survey (or common sense) and the majority of American's want a Democrat in office. The media can continue to play the personality game, but on issues alone (as it should be), we're completely over this Republican rule.

As long as the margin is large enough, there's no way Republicans can realisticly steal this election again. In the upcoming November election, exit polls, which have been historically accurate, will show an amazing turnout for Democrats, yet the media will show only a slight lead over McCain. Trust me, I asked Dionne Warwick about this too and she's hardly ever wrong.

If McCain or Romney get into office you will all know this whole election process was a farce. How can they possibly win when more than double of the voters are turning to Democrats?

In the first four contests in which both parties have competed, the Democrats have set records for turnout and substantially exceeded the Republican showing, according to state parties and state election tallies.

In South Carolina on Saturday, for example, more than 530,000 Democrats voted, nearly twice the Democratic turnout of 2004, and nearly 20 percent higher than the Republican vote the week before.

Other indicators of an enthusiasm gap show up in polls, with more Democrats than Republicans reporting excitement about voting this year and a strong commitment to their candidate, according to recent New York Times/CBS News polls. Democratic presidential candidates have also regularly out-raised the Republicans in campaign cash.

Republican Party analysts are already preempting to explain away the huge turnout, saying Democrats will be more divided if their man/woman doesn't get the nomination. I simply disagree with that baseless assumption. Although we do need to be united, the Bush years have left such a bad taste in people's mouths that, in the end, just about *any* Democrat will suffice.

NOTE:

Polls are now showing McCain beating both Hillary and Obama. Jeez, if more than twice as many Democrats are showing up to vote in every single state so far, how can these polls seriously be accurate? Granted, not every state has been included, yet with these kinds of huge margins among voters, the polls are at the very least suspect.

A few weeks ago I did a really really mean post about Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee and body fat distribution in general. I thought it was completely done in poor taste and decided to delete it, but I do want to revisit the Huckster.

This man scares me. From his total batshit crazy Faith-Based Constitution to his projected obsession with homosexuality, you would think many of these wacked out ideas of his would be plenty for half-thinking zombies to run for the hills and take his bizarrely life-like resemblance to Nixon off the goddamn TV and off the polls for good. But that would take a ~~miracle~~ free and publicly funded media to accomplish. So instead, I urge everyone, who seems so fixated on celebrity and Britney anyway, to maybe then make your decisions based on which "famous" person stands behind them during acceptance speeches.

Chuck Norris is the absolute worst artiste evah! I actually find a C-section not nearly as gut-wrenching and vomit inducing as watching Chuck Norris act. Just look at him. The TEETH! The botox! Jesus!

This is my call for everyone to denounce any candidate who uses such pitiful actORs as campaign tools (by 'tools' I mean that literally and figuratively). As though Chuck Norris has some sort of wherewith all for political discourse anyway. He can't even convince me he's a Texas Ranger, how am I going to be convinced Huckadip should be President? Chuck apparently has never taken a road trip in places like Bolivia where there is no such thing as tax collection, but he's sure passionate about his phallus...err I mean gun...heh heh, heh. I might think differently if it was De Niro or somebody cool like that. But crappy actors who have for years polluted the airwaves with horribly bad syndication and infomercials should be banned from showing their faces on TV ever again.

Just the other day I was talking to a fellow co-worker and we were both like, Wtf? What has Oprah really given us... Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray! Oh, and a school in Africa that isn't going so well. Now she's selling us a black man and hope.

Benazir Bhutto interview on November 2, 2007

Now you know I just luvs me some gewd conspiracI, so check this video interview of Benazir Bhutto on November 2, 2007. The whole thing is quite interesting, in particular around the 6:10 mark when she begins to mutter, "who murdered Osama bin Laden." A simple slip of the tongue? Watch closely how she says the complete name: Osama bin Laden. There is a slight pause after "Osama." That means she thought about what she just said and hoped no one caught onto it. And no one apparently did. Also, those recent videos of Osama are way cheesy and I know those assholes can afford a two hundred and fifty dollar video camera that can take some decent footage of him talking into that karaoke microphone - sound and audio. The dude has been dead since Bush said, "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care."

Bhutto knew it and we all knew it. Bhutto's assassination is a sad reminder of how power can not only kill the people's hope but lie to them with such ease.

I used to love Xmas as a kid. We all did. I even enjoyed it as a teenager and young adult when family would get together for some kick ass turkey, mashed potatoes, and barrels of wine. Now that my family has all moved away I am subjected to my better half's family for the festive season. Don't get me wrong. Some of those old ladies know how to cook some food, but the wine is gone (holy rollers forgot Jesus drank it) and it has turned into one big circle jerk of twenty minute stops at aunt Marlene's, mawmaw Sally's, and about six other semi-related in-laws that I never see otherwise. I think I could even stand it without the alcohol if we would at least sit down for dinner and had some good gossipy gab. But instead, the one food stop is buffet style (albeit tasty) with totally uncomfortable and uptight small talk. That just means I'm cooking next year and those who want to get drunk with me can.

What's worse are the presents. Call me an ungrateful bitch, but let me explain.

Foremost, I have a small tot while my better half has about 1500 family members in the greater Kanawha valley who all seem to think they have to buy something for him. That means my tot has to receive at least 800 plastic pieces of shit toys that he'll never even touch. Cause one, they are lame toys, and two, he's like very young and can't register that much crap in his tiny wittle head.

As if he really needs yet another John Deer vehicle to ~~trip over~~ push around in the living room. He doesn't want pseudo learning toys either when everyone knows Legos are the real deal and way more fun for the adults to play with. Give a kid those and an old remote control and that's all they need. That's it! Books are always nice too. Tots don't want a bunch of colored plastic pieces of crap they can't even build kewl stuff with. They want what you have. Like a fork, beer can, or old toilet paper roll. I hate plastic toys and I hate tearing the tape and wires off even more. Please quit filling our house with this debris cause I'm donating it to the Union Mission tomorrow.

Secondly, I don't need clutter. I don't even require it. And throughout the entire year I have enough disposable income that I can go out and buy just about anything I could ever want - minus the yacht.

Sure, getting someone a special gift can fill you with all kinds of feel good emotions. Makes the holiday's joyous and thankful. But not if those gifts come from the friggin' Dollar $tore. It ain't the bargain rate. It's that The Dollar $tore is full of $uperfluous $hit and you didn't even have to think about what you just bought you $tupid twat. It's clutter and now I have anxiety. No more fuzzy gloves and no more drink coasters!

WV Author Jeannette Walls Lecture at UC

I was fortunate enough to attend a free lecture at the University of Charleston by Jeannette Walls, the now famous author of The Glass Castle and former resident of Welch, WV. Ms. Walls spoke at length about how the book has affected her life and her husband John's invariant persistence for her to not only write it, but finish it. She had actually begun writing her memoir in her teens and her 20's but always seemed to throw them away. She thought at first she had to make up some good stories to make it interesting. That was until she saw her mother trifling through a dumpster and later asked her how to write this book. "Just tell the truth," her mom said.

In attendance were many high school students who were probably enticed into coming for a "good grade" but I'm positive they left feeling as though they can accomplish anything in this country. Despite Jeannette growing up dirt "po'" with little to no food, her parents always gave her a belief in herself and a fearless attitude toward life. I guess what she really wanted to drive home was that education and adult encouragement will inevitably bring one success.

While discussing what had become of her brothers and sisters, she told a story of her brother Brian and her taking a trip back down to Welch and looking up old friends. She said Brian always had lots of friends and they ended up seeing one them. "Let's just call him Sam," she said. One day back in 1970's Welch, Jeannette and Brian went to Sam's house and saw that his mother was cooking a huge breakfast while Sam was drawing a horse at the kitchen table. "Why can't I have this kind of home life," Jeannette thought to herself. Then Sam's dad came down the stairs and hit him upside the head and said, "You aren't any kind of artist!" After that, Jeannette knew just how lucky she really was. Her parents had always encouraged her to do what she enjoyed. And when Sam and Brian finally saw each other again after all those years, they gave each other one of those half-hugs that guys always give and Sam asked, "What are you doing now?" "I'm a cop," replied Brian. "Well I'm a criminal!" said Sam. Then they laughed about how they were both in the same business. Brian retired from being a NYC cop and is now a 9th grade teacher. Sam is still a criminal.

Jeannette finally got in contact with her sister Maureen who is still in California. A friend of Maureen's called Ms. Walls after the book was published, gave her the contact info and told her to keep trying - it was difficult to get Maureen to call anyone back, she said. The sisters have talked, though haven't seen each other yet.

Lori is still an artist in NYC and doing well.

Jeannette is now writing an autobiography about her mother's life but has no idea if it will come to fruition. Her mother's abandoned building burnt down last year and she was asked to come live with her and John in Virginia. Her mother refused to be a charity case until she was asked to take care of the horses. She lives in a mobile home on the property and is 73 years old. She still has her land in Texas and it is her own Glass Castle. It was always something that she could hold onto and something that could provide her with a future. The land is worth a million dollars - if it has oil.

It was only until recently that Ms. Walls was able to finally write her memoir. She said she thought it required a certain perspective to be able to write it as truthfully as she saw it. On her book tours she would always get asked how her mother could not provide food and her father drank money away. Yet what she has chosen to do is take the encouragement from her parents and apply to her life rather than expect some of the things they could have done differently. I think we can all take that piece of advice. It is truly what we decide to make of our lives and what we choose to accept about our history.

"We are all very lucky," Ms. Walls said last night. And we are.

After a week or so of inticing, I didn't get very far with Roberts...or Newman...or Sade. I sent this email:

Dear Mr. Newman,

I'm sorry for not replying soon enough. My internet
tubes were clogged all weekend because Verizon is a
corporatist multinational that subjugates the
proletariat. My apologies for these fascist dicks!

Anyhoo, thank you so much for your pictures. You are
quite the dashing young fellow! In fact, you look just
like my neighbor Kevin.

But before we can commence my contact with your dead
father's bank, I have to be sure I can trust you. I
must be confident that I am conducting business
relations with someone who has the same vision as I
do.

As I said in my previous email, I totally think this
arts and crafts idea of mine is going to be big. And I
have to have a partner who is able and willing to put
together some of the prototypes with me that we will
be giving to some manufacturing companies here in the
U.S. to mass produce for us.

Therefore, I need you to put together one or two of
these glittery shakers that I described in my previous
email. Here are the instructions:

1. Get Two paper plates, some dry coffee beans, glue,
glitter, and colored markers.
2. Place a small amount of the beans between the two
paper plates, glue the plates together, and decorate
the outside of the plates to your liking with the
glitter and colored markers. I just want to see your
artistic ability at this point.
3. Take some pictures of your creation and email them
back to be as soon as possible!

That truly sux about your dad. My dad was an abusive
prick who came home drunk every night and made
mayonnaise, pickle, and hot sauce sandwiches to
palliate his sour mash headache - rather than spend
time with his kids. I hated him for it. But he died of

Personally, I enjoy arts and crafts. I was thinking

So I was sitting at my computer this evening drinking a cold Sierra Nevada and reading the Heavy Hitters Message Board when I came across a peculiar post. The topic was a heated one, wrought with passion and unbridled prejudice. Entitled "Dirty public school books and the Gay agenda," Mr. Waters seemed determined to convince his readers that liberals and gays were the reason our society has become what it is - whatever that is...gawdless or something.

But what caught my inquiring eye was his last post on the subject, and in particular, this first sentence:

Some of you self-proclaimed mavens of intellect, consistently use the same, weak, ad homonym tactic to convey some kind of all-knowing superiority over those of us that do not fall within their political or ideological view, especially when it comes to religion.

I thought to myself, gee, that's quite a sentence there Jer. It had a cadence to it. A nuance of an experienced writer who was resolute with his ideas. It was nothing like I had ever seen from the Decider. And to be quite honest, I had to know what a "maven of intellect" was. Well, with a quick click of this here mouse, I highlighted that whole aformentioned sentence by accident and hit search on Google before I could even say "maven of intellect." And it churned out ONE hit:

Naturally, I clicked on the link and it brought me to some archive of comments about an anti-Japanese propoganda film. Ok, whatever. Made no sense until I scrolled down a bit to the 11th comment made by a "Delineate" who said this:

Wouldn't it be great to create a fictional study group with fictional scientists and fictional findings that go against global warming science and watch the skeptics get all hot for it? Well someone did just THAT! haha! Skeptics jumped on the spoof study like mad, cause the study claimed that ocean bacteria, not humans, create global warming! The apparent author of the fake study was interviewed and said:

Judge Judy has to be the greatest judge show of all time. People's Court comes in at a close second but the rest of them should be canceled on principle alone. I tune in just about every day at 5pm and watch a full hours worth of great seething attack on the moronic. But yesterday, I witnessed probably the greatest episode of all time. And it wasn't because of Judy.

She tried to make amends for the damaged car by offering some of the meat to the plaintiff and was very offended when the plaintiff declined.

Does that mean the popular Irving Stone novel, "The Agony and the Ecstasy," that is also a high school favorite, will end up being banned too? I mean, with all the homosexual references in there? How about we burn "Fahrenheit 451" just for kicks instead.

Book banning reminds me of the the Puritan times. Ahh, memories.

This action of banning "Prince of Tides," that has about as much sex as FOX drama's do on any given week night, goes right in line step with abstinence only teaching in sex ed. But this goes deeper folks. There is an undercurrent and strong desire to eliminate public schools altogether and it starts with these religious sex deprived zealots.

Holy rollers need to take their kids and put them in private snake handler schools if they want to raise them to be idiots, and leave our public schools alone.

The University student asked Mr. Kerry a number of questions, most importantly about Greg Palast's book entitled "Armed Madhouse." I've yet to read it but I'm sure it kicks ass. It basically delves into such fun topics like globalization, big oil, Kerry's disgraceful surrender to be President of the United States in 2004, and much much more.

But anyway, this here video begins with the beginning of the student's questions, instead of just the flailing of the arms and screaming display that the news insists on showing. Questions that NEED real answers. Imagine if Kerry had in fact taken office in 2004. Would we still be in the disaster that is Iraq? Would we now be on our way to attack Iran? WV State University Sucks Ass

I suppose I'll have to lose a hair of anonymity here and tell you why I am hating on that school at the moment. I attended WV State a few years ago to finish up an Accounting degree after years of partying and waisting my parents money. It was time to grow up. hehe.

Anyway, I chose Accounting because it was practical, I could make more money, and I luv to count beans. At State, there are general business courses that were required of everyone in the "Business Administration" program. These general courses were taken by those that majored in Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing. So we all had to take basic management, economic, marketing classes, and so forth. The big difference was that the Finance and Accounting people took much harder classes in addition to these general ones. I would even say the Accounting people took the hardest classes of them all. Auditing is a bitch!

Like many commuters, I worked and took classes in the evening. I busted my ass that last year, even attending summer school. I was quite anxious to receive my diploma and hang it up on my wall, in my office, so my boss would finally respect me.
And this is the piece of shit paper I got!:

Did you know that Rupert Murdoch officials have donated to Hillary Clinton's campaign most substantially? How odd. How very odd.

I've been thinking this for a long time, and I believe the Republicans want Hillary to be the front Democratic runner in '08. And Earnest Partridge has put my theory into believable plausibility.

There are many compelling reasons why the front-running Democratic hopeful is also the most vulnerable.

* Most significantly, among the general voting population Hillary Clinton has the highest disapproval ratings of all the Democratic candidates - in fact, according to a June Mason-Dixon poll, she is the only candidate of either party of whom a majority (52%) have said that they would not consider voting. In addition, 42% reported an unfavorable opinion of Clinton, compared to 39% favorable; the only candidate with a net negative rating. These are devastating statistics which are unlikely to change significantly, since the public is by now well acquainted with Clinton. One would assume that such statistics would disqualify a candidate. However, the establishment Democrats who support Hillary are unperturbed.

* Next, "the woman thing." Though the mainstream media has scrupulously avoided the topic, the fact that Clinton is the first woman in US history likely to be the presidential nominee of a major party must be a serious obstacle to her election. This is regrettable, and I sincerely wish that it were not so. But there it is, and the Democratic party will ignore this reality at its peril. And if Clinton selects Barack Hussein Obama as her running-mate, with the first black candidate on a national ticket the "blue" populist resurgence in the South will be stopped in its tracks and the Democrats will lose every electoral vote in the South. Jim Crow, while muted, still lives. Also regrettable, but true.

* If Clinton were to be elected and serve two full terms, at the end of her administration in 2016, two families would then have occupied the White House for twenty-eight years. Many Americans are extremely put-off by the very idea of dynasties and royal families. I know that I am. Millions of voters, I suspect, would go to the polls in November, 2008 with this thought foremost on their minds: "this dynasty business must end, and end now."

* Hillary Clinton is widely perceived to be a political "weathervane" who adapts her positions and talking points to shifts in public opinion. Most of the public has had quite enough of "focus-group politics," and yearns for a politician who acts and speaks clearly with conviction and on principle. In the eighties, voters would say of Ronald Reagan, "I may disagree with him, but I know where he stands." And then they would vote for him. Pop quiz: state in twenty-five words or less, the guiding principles of Clinton's politics. See what I mean? The failure of the Democratic Congress to exhibit courage and clarity of its convictions, and its unwillingness to act decisively has resulted in its dismal public approval ratings - lower, even than those of George Bush. The public will not look kindly upon similar behavior by the Democratic presidential candidate.

* Clinton and her managers apparently believe that the winning votes are to be found in a presumed "center" between establishment (e.g., Congressional) Democrats and the Republicans. Thus they have swallowed the kool-aid served up by the GOP-lite Democratic Leadership Council and the beltway pundits. In fact, as poll after poll testifies, overwhelming public opinion concerning Iraq, the "war on terror," the rule of law, economic justice, health care, minimum wage, public education, government regulation of commerce, environmental protection, campaign finance reform, etc. is "outside" and to the left of both parties. The failure of the "official" Democrats to recognize the public mind, accounts in large part for the public contempt for the Democratic Congress.

* While the mainstream media and the Republicans have been uncommonly gentle with Clinton - one might say suspiciously gentle - when the conventions are over and the campaign begins, the GOP and the media attacks will be brutal. And Clinton will be an especially vulnerable target. As we well know by now, GOP campaign themes have no necessary grounding in fact - witness Al Gore and "inventing the internet," and John Kerry's encounter with the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth." Hillary Clinton can be expected to be overwhelmed by a barrage of malicious rumors and innuendos.

While Hillary Clinton is clearly not the people's choice (cf. The Mason-Dixon poll above), she is most assuredly the media's choice. Democratic candidates such as Dennis Kucinich and Bill Richardson, whose views on Iraq, economic justice, and health care most closely coincide with public opinion, are relegated to "the second tier" - not serious contenders. And who decides this allocation? Not the public - there have been no primaries yet. Of course, the media decides. Early poll numbers largely reflect "name recognition." And the media repeatedly prints and broadcasts the names that are "recognized."

We all know the media and GOP/Corporate machine are one in the same. Tis why we see very little hard hitting critical blasts against Hillary on teevee at the moment. Those won't happen until she's the Democratic nominee.

Unless Gore or someone of his electable stature (preferably white and male) gets into this race soon, we are doomed for another GOP President and not much is going to change in this country. Hillary, whether you like her or not, is the smartest candidate among them all, and I'm quite surprised she doesn't realize that this country has yet to get over its prejudices and lack of enlightenment. Does she truly believe she can be elected? Or is she simply part of this conspiracy to prop up Democrats destined to lose?

They’re just back from visiting over there. They both have been strong critics of the war, both worked in the prior administration; but now saying that they think there’s a possibility, indeed, that we could be successful.

If you've been following how this administration uses the media to trump their positions beforehand then you'll know this is just another prime example. I'm sure many of you know by now that I'm a bleeding heart liberal. Liberals hate freedoms, they intend to destroy the economy, and we especially desire to make sure poor, worthless dolts who refuse to work get all the free shit they can. Oh, and we love trees too. But that doesn't stop some of us from really hating certain types of peeps.

I actually can't stand the hypocritical losers who work the system. These kinds of people are the ones who talk the talk and prove you otherwise. You know who I'm talking about. The hypocritical pieces of shit who hate any sort of socialized system but then jump at the chance to abuse such systems. The ones who make it a point to tell you how much they love Jesus and that they really and truly want an honest pay for an honest day's worth of work. The kind of assholes who hire Casto Clinic and Doctor Punjabi Dipaka to claim some sort of back injury. Back injuries are soo convenient because they are soo hard to dispute. And the truly worthless scumbags understand this. Then you see them riding a jet ski or something.

Now, everyone knows that a Mimosa in the morning, cracked beer at 10:30 a.m.(beer 30), 7&7's by noon, and a totti or two in the evening is the way to the path of coolness. And she may be played by Kate Beckinsale, who is quite a few years younger than the real thing.

Edie Falco, fresh from "The Sopranos," is targeted to play the Bill Keller role as the editor of the jailed female reporter, Variety reports. Matt Damon would be the prosecutor, and up-and-comer Vera Farmiga would play the dashing CIA agent.

When did a junior high journalism class become qualification to write for the Charleston Daily Mail? From Don Surber's opine:

Public support of the Democratic Congress is a Fizzie, too. The Los Angeles Times released a poll this week that showed only 27 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, while 65 percent disapprove.

Last April, the same newspaper poll showed a Republican Congress with 28 percent approval and 61 percent disapproval.

It took Republicans 12 years to dissolve. Democrats have done it in less than six months.

I congratulate them on their efficiency.

Surber dutifully fails to note that Congress's current approval rating is based on one issue and one issue alone: Getting our soldiers the fuck out of Iraq.

And what...we've had like 6 months of a Democratic Congress? So I guess suddenly now that anything that gets done in Congress, or doesn't, is somehow a Democratic blunder to a grub writer like Surber. Nevermind that there were 12 years of corporatist welfare, 5 years of enabling the worst administration evah, and now just enough obstructionist Repubs to prevent any such accomplishments.

As Senate Minority Trent Lott, R-Miss., said, “the strategy of being obstrucionist can work or fail. So far it’s working for us."

Republicans continually threaten to filibuster, requiring 60 votes for cloture (a limit on debate) to proceed on a wide variety of measures. In the first six months of the 110th Congress, there have been 13 cloture votes. In comparison, in the first sessions of the 108th and 109th Congresses, when Democrats were in the minority, there were a total of four cloture votes.

Reid To Force Senate Into All-Night Session Tuesday

Forcing his Republican colleagues to put up or shut up on the notion of an up-or-down vote, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) just moments ago announced that he will immediately file a cloture motion on the Reed-Levin troop redeployment bill and, if Republicans follow through with a filibuster, will place the Senate in a prolonged all-night session Tuesday to force a true continuation of debate.

Here's the the text of the Reed-Levin amendment.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed “an automatic 60-vote threshold for all key Iraq amendments.”

While Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) calls out McConnell and Repubs filibuster threats. Watch it!

Omg, Jerry is *the* absolute most unsportsmanlike debater. But then again, he's the Decider.

First, he deletes my posts, and then he bans me once more from his persistent Down for Maintenance free forum because he can't stand for anyone to expose the folly of his argument. He seriously wants us to believe his theory that the government providing free internet access to the East End will endanger impressionable children to porn, bomb making material, and who knows what else.

So that means, the kids who already have internet access (provided by their parents or private business) are just as vulnerable to the filth of the internet tubes, and we need to make sure they are ok too.....right?

"Wrong!" sayeth Jer. It's ok if private business does it, or a parent does it. See, it doesn't really matter if kids are exposed to internet tube filth, as long as the government (rather, his precious tax dollars) don't provide it. Therefore, his concern for children is completely bogus. And he knows it. Which is why he banned me so he could get the last bolded ALL CAPS word in.

If anyone's ever read my rants on global warming, the primary point I continue to drive home is the cost-benefit analysis of doing something as opposed to nothing. Below is a video response to another video called Junk Science: Global Warming Myth Busted. The junk one is some couch potato doode with a fucking ball cap on trying to get all sciency on us. It's very looong, you can't see his power point, and to be honest, I didn't watch the whole thing. But let's assume what dirty hat guy says is true and what every free marketeer screams is true: That the worst possible scenario for action combating global warming is economic depression. However, you then must look at the worst possible scenario for doing NOTHING.That's what the video below does in simple terms. This video instead has a nerdy looking guy obviously holed up in his lab. I tend to favor the nerds as opposed to the goatee wearin' pieces of shit holed up in their living rooms. Supreme Court Sides Against Bush In Global Warming Case

The Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government has the authority to regulate greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

Frank O’Donnell of Clean Air Watch writes, “The
Supreme Court has confirmed that carbon dioxide can

Ok, this kinda dumb but kinda kewl if you like movie editing and fast cars. I happened upon this site a while back and found a neat little thing to watch when you have absolutely nothing else to do. From the panopticist.com:

Lelouch has apparently claimed that it was he who was behind the wheel; he supposedly also said that the car was a Mercedes, not a Ferrari, and that the sounds of a Ferrari were overdubbed later. But I don't have the energy to investigate whether (a) he actually claimed these things or (b) the claims are actually true.

So check out the google map thingummajig and follow the instructions to view the film snippet and the google map at the same time. One interesting side note: The filmmaker was unable to get a permit to get the streets closed. Crazy!

If you are a big conspiracy nut like I am, then you'll enjoy the House Oversight Hearing that was held this past Monday concerning Global Warming. They took testimony from Philip Cooney, the douchebag who would edit out NASA scientist James Hansen's reports to the gobment. Not only was Cooney NOT a scientist, but he's a lobbyist for the oil companies.

Anyway, Global Warming is such a huge hoax that the Pentagon has finally admitted that it's real and the House is actually holding totally major hearings that you can view here and here.

Kidding of course. But what happens when a radio talk show host loses their job? Answer: They either call up their old band mates in hopes of a rawkin' summer tour, or they get enough free time to play Decider on a local West Virginia message board. With his unique blend of uberness and how much local leebural politics suck big time, Jerry Waters had one of the most ~~wingnuttery~~ successful talk radio shows this side of the Kanawha. Unfortunately, his show was subsequently cancelled. Hopefully the board doesn't end up going with the show, because it is a very insightful place to talk to ubercons.
